We will post later how much we have raised for
Save the Children
Firs Hill School pupils, Mrs Martin, and the mums in the English classes are supporting a school in Kenya called "The Rainbow Academy". Schola Cashdan who is an Esol teacher at Firs Hill has been helping to build the school brick by brick. It will open in January 2015! The English classes organised a fundraising sale to raise money to buy the children books, equipment and furniture to help them get started. The sale raised over £400! so well done ladies!
Mrs Martin was also kind enough to let us send some mini whiteboards, pens and rubbers for the children. Here they are trying them out for the first time!
Family Learning at Firs Hill
A brilliant six week family learning course called “Talking Together” ran in September at Firs Hill School.
The course is aimed at families with children in nursery and reception classes and will really help them to support their children in their speaking and listening. Pretend play and lots of talking and asking questions about what you are doing is really important in those early years and can often be created with items around your home for free!
There were ten ladies who were all mums or grandparents, at the class, with five different nationalities. Everyone got on really well together with women mixing from different countries doing small group activities together.
The tutor Vicky Proctor, asked the women if they knew what a ‘den’ was? Only one out of the ten had ever heard this word and knew what it was. They then had the task of making a den and thinking of what they could do at home with their children. A few ideas they came up with were reading, having a picnic, singing, making a look-out and spending individual time with each child.
