  • Sheffield Primary School Bouldering Championships 2014

On the 4th of April six children Amina, Humera, Qasim, Yasin Declaen and Ales from Firs Hill School competed in the bouldering Championships.  This was held at Climbing Works in Sheffield.

It was the first bouldering competition of its kind in the UK; all schools in Sheffield were invited. The difference between bouldering and rock climbing is that no safety ropes are used and children must use their strength and confidence to overcome their fears and reach the top.  Around 20 schools competed and there were six competitors from each school.  Children had to climb about 15 different faces; these varied in terms of their intensity and gradient. Some walls actually involved the children hanging upside down in order to complete them!  To make things more difficult the children could only use the certain colour grips that were allocated for each climb.

The children from Firs Hill encouraged their team members to do well as well as others from different teams.  This demonstrated their higher level of maturity and good ethos that we encourage at Firs Hill.  Declaen in particular shocked the judges with his outstanding ability and was nicknamed 'The Squirrel'.  The Firs Hill team performed admirably and were awarded 2nd place.  However Declaen comfortably took individual first place and he is now the best performing primary aged boulderer in Sheffield.
